Today we’re going to focus on Comprehensive coverage, continuing in our series of insurance articles on the coverages you will face when you go online for a free insurance quote.
Comprehensive coverage is the partner of Collision. Much like collision it works to protect your car from any damage you might receive, like collision if you suffer a loss you can file a claim (minus your deductible) and collect payment to repair your car. However, where Collision is a more cut and dry coverage that kicks in when your car collides with something and you are at fault, comprehensive is a little vague. Often times customers call into our local McKinney insurance agency, with a number of questions about what exactly constitutes a Comprehensive loss. So let’s clear it up.
A comprehensive loss is any damage to your car caused by anything that is not excluded from your policy, and is not collision. That’s a pretty broad statement, so here are some more specific examples: hailstorms, theft, vandalism, glass breakage, explosions, earthquakes, and more. This broad list of loss causes is why often auto insurance quotes from such companies as: Statefarm, Nationwide, Safeco, Travelers, and Metlife, might refer to Comp coverage as “Other than collision”. It is any loss caused other than collision.
An important note, comprehensive can be accidental or at fault: if a person has auto insurance with us and is from Plano, and is traveling in Southlake where he is hit by a hail storm he can collect under comprehensive coverage. If another customer has auto insurance with us and is from Addison, and hits an animal while traveling through Frisco, he will also be covered under comprehensive coverage. (Collision with an animal is the one case where a collision wouldn’t be filed under collision coverage)
It’s important to understand these coverages when you are looking over your auto insurance quote from the big insurance companies. As local agents, we understand that you are trying to find the most affordable car insurance, but sometimes that cheap insurance comes at the cost of valuable coverage. For this reason we always recommend a customer carry Comprehensive coverage.
